October 2024

We arrived late on the Friday night ready for an early Saturday start. To get to and from the airport we used the Glasgow Airport Express £17 open return. Follow the signs out from the airport to the buses and the stop is directly outside (very purple nearly impossible to miss). We headed straight our hotel Premier Inn Glasgow St Enochs Square.

Day 1

When we got up it was very grey and hammering it down with rain! On went the waterproof jacket and coat and we headed to Riverside Coffee Café for some homemade Greek pies and a lovely large cup of tea.
We then headed to the Pentagon Centre for a bike tour with Gallus Pedals. They are a tour company who use fully refurbished ex-post office bikes who are named after (not so) famous Glaswegian women.
A three hour bike journey took us to:
River Clyde
Clyde Arc Bridge
Riverside Transport Museum
The Clysdale Distillery (go here for some interesting pictures of the history of Glasgow Dock area)
Finnieston Crane
The Tall Ship Glenlee
Railway Arches Mural
Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum
University of Glasgow
Botanical Gardens
We learnt a lot about Glasgow through this tour and also managed at least 30 minutes of sunshine!

After 3 hours on the bike we had built up an appetite and went with the tour guides recommendation of Ardnamurchan Scottish Restaurant & Bar. Here we had a 3 course set menu including Haggis Neapes & Tatties to start. At £25 for 3 course lunch menu it was really lovely food at good value.

We swung by Tantrum Doughnuts to pick up two of the popular Crème Brûlée doughnuts. It was then back to the hotel for a doughnut, cuppa tea, shower and change.
We headed out to Bavaria Brauhaus, a German Style beer hall with lots of different German beers in tap. We then got the train (2 stops) to the OVO Hydro Arena. The venue hosts multiple events throughout the year. You can walk along the river to the Hydro (or bike like we had done earlier that day) however due to he cold we decided to get the train. Later that night we headed back by train into the city and ended the night at Revolutions for a dance.

Day 2

Following a 2am bed time we had a lovely 10am lie in. For a well needed hangover cure we dropped into Kcal kitchen for some tasty breakfast. The café does a all day breakfast menu so if you get given the lunchtime menu make sure you ask for the breakfast menu! Then it was back to the airport for home!

Top recommendations of Glasgow

  1. Do a tour! Either biking or walking, organised or self guided! There is much more to Glasgow than you might think.
  2. Eat some traditional Scottish food!
  3. Experience the nightlife.
